Truthfully, I expected Tom Davis to step aside once the Republicans decided on a convention instead of a primary in choosing their nominee for the Senate seat of retiring Senator John Warner. Chris Cilizza reports that he’s hearing that Davis could announce as much this week.
That leaves former governor Jim Gilmore as the likely roadkill nominee to face former Democratic governor Mark Warner for the seat. Gilmore has been dying to run against Warner, since Warner followed him as governor and was quite critical of the mess Gilmore left behind. I asked Warner a couple of weeks ago who he’d rather face – Gilmore or Davis – and he said Gilmore.
So both of them will likely get what they want: a faceoff. Unfortunately for Gilmore, he likely won’t get what he wants the most: a win.
