How I spent my day

Re-doing this blog 😉 I’m using what amounts to a blank canvas – Sandbox – so I had to do all of the CSS styling from scratch. I have been wanting another sidebar and this was the only way for me to get it. So poke around, and let me know if you see things that need to be fixed. (I have a couple that I’m working on, anyway.)

Also, let me know if this is too wide. I can probably reduce a little but not much.

UPDATE: I’ve reduced the width back to the same size as it was with only 1 sidebar. I’ve also fixed the width of the columns. Let me know if this is better. (Or if I should go back to the old setup.)

  1. Vivian, if possible, you could try giving specific sizes (ie 560px) to the elements of your page instead of percentages. That way your blog will automatically adjust according to the viewers PC settings.

  2. yup – too wide for me…

I’d say just reduce the width a little of the first wide column…

but perhaps it’s a problem only on my laptop..which is not full sized…

  3. I love the new look as you have too much good sidebar info for just one column! Terry has the right idea, though, for set-up to ensure auto-adjusting for each viewer’s screen.

I have my laptop desktop set to it’s largest available setting, 1280×800, but general website design suggests using 800×600 to meet the majority of users.

    Keep up the good work!

  4. Andre – it is 3 columns. Not sure what you mean.

Terry – I thought I did that but I’ll look again.

    LarryG – I’ll give it a go.

Missy – yeah I knew about the 800 setting but my previous setup was 950 wide. I figured with the extra column, it would need to be 1200 wide in order to not make it too small.

I am probably going back to the old setup until I can get this one coded the way I want it.

  5. fits my screen perfect now…

but if it mucks up others… do what counts for most….

    thanks!

re: cluttered – not for me.. you’ve got a LOT of stuff here. but you’ve got in nicely “fenced”…

    🙂

  6. OK, it’s a little bizzare — perhaps because I’m using I.E. It acts like there are four columns, with the rightmost column empty, but taking up as much space as the leftmost. The middle two seem to be of fixed width.

The leftmost column does not display any content until the third column’s content ends.

  7. What version of IE are you using? Have you tried clearing your cache?

All 3 columns are fixed width now. And I checked it in IE 6 and IE 7 (even though the best browser for viewing this site is Firefox) and I can’t reproduce what you’re seeing.

  8. Oh, the leftmost and rightmost columns (the first and fourth), are variable width. Thus, no left-right scrollbar is displayed, because the browser thinks it is displaying everything. Only when one reduces the width to less than the fixed width of the two middle columns does the left-right scrollbar display, and then the leftmost column is about 10 pixels wide.

To display all of the leftmost column, the browser has to be about 1680 pixels wide. Even then, the leftmost column does not display any content until the third column has displayed all of its content.

  9. Hmm – I just checked it again in the same version of IE as you are using. There are only 3 columns.

The theme is fixed at 950 px wide, with the post column fixed at 570px, and the two sidebars fixed at 180px each.

Could it be your screen resolution?
