Re-doing this blog π I’m using what amounts to a blank canvas – Sandbox – so I had to do all of the CSS styling from scratch. I have been wanting another sidebar and this was the only way for me to get it. So poke around, and let me know if you see things that need to be fixed. (I have a couple that I’m working on, anyway.)
Also, let me know if this is too wide. I can probably reduce a little but not much.
UPDATE: I’ve reduced the width back to the same size as it was with only 1 sidebar. I’ve also fixed the width of the columns. Let me know if this is better. (Or if I should go back to the old setup.)
This is interesting. My first column is your third!!
Yep, looks good in Firefox. (I just downloaded it.) I wonder if my company will let me run Linux — I really hate Microsoft.
You hate Micro$oft but you use IE? π
I can’t even test a 1920 pixel display. The site I mentioned above doesn’t go that wide. (Of course, IE doesn’t comply with certain standards, anyway.)
Gosh, I love all this technical talk.
Isn’t this three column setting almost like what DWJ uses? That’s a WordPress canned theme that you could modify to your liking.
I am bored with mine too. Heaven help if I start with the CSS file. I might not ever finish it.
I didn’t hear about the ‘skins today, how did they do?
Just a marketers 2 cents to this dialogue:
(1) don’t change things because YOU want to or are bored, do so because your audience wants it. And, if you don’t care, if your writing is just for you and you alone, then ignore this. π
(2) a cardinal rule of web design is “never make ’em scroll”. With blog content what it is, your viewers must scroll down, but they’ll never scroll left to right and stick with you (like this http://browsershots.org/screenshots/d93e16d061ed09d72716f51835e6acee/).
P.S. your reverted version still looks great to me and well-structured so as not to look cluttered despite all the content.
Go forth and blog!
Mark – I don’t know what DWJ was using. And in case you didn’t know, we cannot upload our own themes here at WP.com. We can only modify the ones that are already here.
The Skins played Thursday – and lost π¦
Missy – OK, I was a little bored but really, I think two sidebars works better than one. I would hope that few folks are using an 800px wide browser. If they are, then they have been scrolling left to right here at my blog for a while π¦
Hey, it’s what gets loaded onto my computer at work. They’re a bit fussy about people loading programs on their systems without their permission.
How ’bout them Eagles!
Vivian, it’s working properly now. Before it looked like it was set by percentages and it was not giving me a scroll bar when I enlarged or shrunk my browser window (therefore people with smaller screens were seeing a distorted view of your site). But anyway it doesn’t matter because it’s working now. π Looks great too, btw. I love the double sidebar on the right but cannot figure out how to do it with the layout I’m using.
Terry – glad to know it’s working for you. If you are using a WordPress theme, you should check out the WordPress.org forums. No doubt you can find somebody over there who has worked with the same theme and has figured out if it is possible.
