Site notes

I spent several hours on Sunday (actually most of my day) trying to figure out a couple of issues with the blog. Since I’ve added a couple of contributors – with more to come – some have complained that they cannot tell who is writing what pieces until they get to the bottom of the post. Last week, I moved the name of the author to the top of the page, but that only works on the front page and not on the single post pages, which many folks access directly when clicking on a link from Twitter or Facebook.

I gave serious consideration to changing the theme I’m using, but none of the themes available here at wordpress.com, where the blog is hosted, provide what I like – and what you have been accustomed to seeing – for this blog. There is one really nice theme that shows the author at the top of the post and, on the single post page, shows the author’s gravatar and bio. (Those of you who subscribe to the blog via the second email option in the sidebar already see this.) The problem with that theme – Twenty Ten – is that it only has one sidebar, instead of the two I use here. I could make it work but the sidebar would be really long or would be in tiny print. Of course, I could eliminate some of the stuff in the sidebar but the question is what?

So for now, I’ve decided the easiest thing to do is to have the authors include a byline at the top of the post. No byline means I’ve written the post. (Yes, I’m lazy.) Perhaps after tax season I can revisit this.

  1. It’s been a while since I dug into my wordpress theme, but I think you can fix this in the theme editor by editing the post.php file which is called to display individual posts. Move “get author” statement from below the “post content” to above it.
