First on Twitter, then in an email, former Governor Tim Kaine announced that he is running for Senate. His website is here, which is where you can view the announcement video.
The graphic is from Kaine and the 2008 Democratic National Convention. I knew it would come in handy again someday 😉
UPDATE: Just confirmed with Rep. Bobby Scott’s office that he will still be making his decision on whether to run in July.
UPDATE 2: Statement from Sen. Mark Warner:
Tim Kaine is a rarity in modern politics: He listens more than he talks, and he builds bridges where others seek to divide us. I have known and admired Tim since we first met in law school more than 30 years ago. Tim was a great working partner when he served as Virginia’s Lieutenant Governor and Governor. He is a great friend and a proven leader, and I would welcome his partnership in the U.S. Senate on behalf of all Virginians.
UPDATE 3: Statement from Sen. Jim Webb:
I welcome Tim Kaine’s decision to enter this race and I will do everything I can to support his successful election to the U.S. Senate. Tim Kaine has served the people of Virginia with distinction for more than 20 years. He is a leader who possesses the intelligence, temperament and judgment to be an effective member of the U.S. Senate—one who can reach across the aisle to get things done. As U.S. Senator, he will continue to fight for economic fairness and accountable government—principles in which we both believe.
I just dug my button out and put it on.
I don’t know. After thinking about it, Bobby Scott might be a better pick. I mean with a noose hanging at the office, Confederate Flags at his house, video testimony that he used racial slurs, George “Macaca” Allen would have problems if an opponent Bobby Scott asked of Allen’s ability to serve ALL Virginians.
I’m ready to work at his campaign!!!
You have to wonder if Tim’s heart is really in this. It seems like he was pressured to run.
I notice that Virginia Republicans responded with the predictable “big spending liberal” charge.
Have they forgotten that Tim Kaine cut $4-$5 billion out of Virginia’s budget? He made more budget cuts as governor than Allen ever proposed.
He is running against who? What is that guy’s name, monkey fellow or something like that, oh, now I remember he calls the oppostion’s people monkey names. I hope Allen gets buried in the polls and in the voter box.
Left out the I in opposition does that mean I will be helping Kaine, you betcha!
One of the nicest people in politics. Open up the checkbooks and let’s prepare to win!!
