Chesapeake Del. John Cosgrove led the list of Hampton Roads legislators in receiving gifts last year, according to this report. But I’m not going to gig him on that: the France trip, included in the gifts he reported, convinced him that uranium mining “is probably not in the best interest of Hampton Roads.”
So there is a little proof that gifts received by lawmakers don’t always have their intended results.
Nevertheless, I’d prefer Virginia lawmakers be paid a reasonable salary and not receive gifts at all. So kudos to Senator Harry Blevins and Delegate Bob Purkey for being among the 15 legislators who reported no gifts.
By the way – this is the second time in the last few days that Sen. Blevins gets my kudos. His vote last week on abortion legislation was the other.
