The Hampton National Cemetery is in need of help this Friday to plant flags on the 28,000 graves for Memorial Day. I grew up in Phoebus and walked by that cemetery often. It is located next to the church that I attended, and still consider my home church.
I never knew how the flags got on all the graves. The linked article says that volunteers were used to plant them, with most of the volunteers coming from nearby Fort Monroe, also a favorite haunt of mine in my youth. The closing of the base decimated the volunteer corps.
If you can, head over and help. The details, as shown in today’s paper, are on the right. Note that help will also be needed Tuesday to remove the flags.
