Suit filed to end VA’s marriage ban

Wedding-RingsLambda Legal, The American Civil Liberties Union and the American Civil Liberties Union of Virginia filed suit today to overturn Virginia’s ban on same-sex marriage. The press release is here. The actual filing is here.  The plantiffs in the suit are Joanne Harris and Jessica Duff of Staunton and Christy Berghoff and Victoria Kidd of Winchester, but the suit “seeks to represent all same-sex couples in Virginia who wish to marry here or who have married in other jurisdictions.”

To all who asked, after my column last week, if I were going to be a party to the suit, you now have your answer 🙂 If class action is granted, why yes, I will be, as will all of the other couples in Virginia.

And congratulations to couples in Rhode Island and Minnesota, who can marry as of today!
