ICYMI: Openness takes a holiday

Norfolk mermaidMy latest op-ed, title above, appeared in The Virginian-Pilot Thursday. It’s been a while since I wrote anything about Norfolk, but the way they are handling the appointment for Ward 3 required it. There is no reason for council to have waited this long to put in place the process for selecting a replacement – unless what Jill Nolan reported a few weeks ago is true.

It just gets tiresome to live in a city where everything is done behind closed doors, where the pool is always shallow and contains the same folks. It’s a charade visited upon the public – and a disgrace.

I’ve no doubt that Virginia Beach council had in mind the folks that they wanted to appoint to the two seats on their council. But at least they didn’t wait until the holidays to do it.

Council elections are coming up in May. Let’s not forget this.

My column appears in The Virginian-Pilot every week, usually on Thursdays. You can see the columns as they are published here, or navigate to them from the PilotOnline.com homepage by clicking on Opinion and then choosing my name at the bottom of the dropdown list. You can also see the columns by liking my Facebook page. Although my column appears weekly, I am not and have never been an employee of The Virginian-Pilot.
