NARAL Pro-Choice Virginia will hold summits in Fairfax and Norfolk next month.
Women of color are disproportionally impacted by anti-abortion, anti-women policies at both the state and national level, and yet women of color have historically been left out, ignored, or under-represented in the reproductive rights movement.
NARAL Pro-Choice Virginia is committed to changing this. That’s why our 2nd Annual Leadership & Advocacy Summits will explore the unique experiences of women of color in Hampton Roads and Northern Virginia and discuss the intersecting barriers women of color face in accessing health care, building their families, and living dignified, self-determined lives.
The women’s movement, like pretty much everything else, has been less than welcoming of women of color. (We’re #4!) Acknowledging that there is a real difference between the experiences of minority women versus majority women is a step in the right direction.
The planned summits – September 12 at George Mason in Fairfax and September 19 at Tidewater Community College in Norfolk – are day-long events designed to elicit conversation as well as engage in activism.
The event costs $10*, which covers meals and snacks. The deadline for applying to attend the summit is next Monday, August 24. The application is here.
* – From the application: “If your application is accepted, you will be asked to pay a $20 reservation fee to hold your spot, and will receive a $10 reimbursement at the end of the event. Individuals who pay the registration fee but do not come to the event will not receive their money back. If this requirements proves to be a financial barrier in your consideration of joining the Summits, or if you have any other questions, please contact Nicole Grim (email@example.com)”
