I don't think it happens very often that opinion writers break the news. They tend to opine on the fact previously presented - or at least that's my general impression. But Tuesday, Virginian-Pilot columnist Michelle Washington broke a story - and it has reverberated around the country, courtesy of a link from Drudge Report. A … Continue reading When an opinion makes the news

Vote “Your Race” for City Council in Norfolk?
Guest post by Rodney Jordan In the City of Norfolk, there are six candidates vying for two city council seats. Given the opportunity to vote for the two best candidates of my choice, I would vote for one candidate who happens to be black and another who happens to be white. But, alas, in Norfolk … Continue reading Vote “Your Race” for City Council in Norfolk?
Chamber of Commerce Norfolk City Council questionnaires
The Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce sent questionnaires to the candidates in Tuesday's election. The candidates' completed questionnaires can be found here. Yes, I read through them all. Seems like some folks didn't understand the questions 😉
Norfolk’s Ward 7
Perhaps it is because there are four candidates in the Ward 6 race that the Ward 7 race, with just two candidates, has been pretty much of a sleeper. Or maybe it is because the differences between the two wards in terms of fundraising is so stark: according to VPAP, over $154,000 had been raised … Continue reading Norfolk’s Ward 7
Norfolk GAINS candidates forum
I attended the candidates forum hosted by Norfolk GAINS last night. A report of the event from Virginian-Pilot educational reporter Steven Vegh is here. The forum, like the group, focused on our public schools. Perhaps the very best part of the forum was the questions themselves. Rare is the case when I attend candidate forums … Continue reading Norfolk GAINS candidates forum

I couldn't make Tuesday night's council meeting and had planned to watch the video later. Catching up on Twitter after it was over, I read a tweet that prompted me to head over and check it out 🙂 You can read about the exchange here and see for yourself in the video below. The fireworks … Continue reading Fireworks at the Norfolk council meeting

Pilot predictions Norfolk: 2 for 2
The Virginian-Pilot editorial board published its endorsements for Norfolk council today, with predictable results. About the only thing they did in this editorial that I didn't expect was to mention by name every candidate running. That's a good thing: name ID is one of the top issues that challengers face.
Predictions on Pilot endorsements: Norfolk
Oh, to have been a fly on the wall when the editorial board met with the candidates for Norfolk council 🙂 I think they should tape the interviews and put them on the web for all of us to see - like the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel did with its Herman Cain interview. In its editorial … Continue reading Predictions on Pilot endorsements: Norfolk
Promises, promises
My latest column, title above, appeared in The Virginian-Pilot Wednesday. It was inspired by this Compass piece on the upcoming council elections in Norfolk. Candidates make promises to voters all the time, some big, some small. Rare is the case when there is an effort to track whether they actually keep them. When you combine … Continue reading Promises, promises
