For Mark Warner & Terry McAuliffe

Both of you are running around Virginia, trying to help Democratic candidates get elected in a tough year. Good for you. So you both need to be aware the next time you come to Norfolk just who your friends are. I now live in the 83rd as well, thanks to redistricting. I'm waiting for my … Continue reading For Mark Warner & Terry McAuliffe

A different kind of bailout

My latest op-ed appeared in The Virginian-Pilot Wednesday. It is quite interesting to me that there has been a slew of applications from Virginia localities to "bail out" of the preclearance rules of The Voting Rights Act this year. So far, five localities have reached agreements with the U.S. Justice Department and another four applications … Continue reading A different kind of bailout

Norfolk Commissioner’s and Treasurer’s offices

Guest post by Douglas E. Knack Beat up on the Commissioner of the Revenue’s and the Treasurer’s offices in Norfolk season must have begun again. A recent newspaper had fraternal twin stories about them. What I took away from these stories is threefold. >" /> First, both offices are dysfunctional. Cough, cough, cough

As big of a story as the opening of Norfolk's first-in-the-state light rail line was this weekend, it is another event which kept riders such as myself away from it: the Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge fire. According to this story, the fire started August 4 and has grown to be the largest since … Continue reading Cough, cough, cough

Here's a video produced by The Virginian-Pilot: The paper also has tons of pictures online in this story, including the one below The Tide is free to ride all weekend. Looks like fun! UPDATE: Due to the … Continue reading Friday fun: Ride the Tide

Ride the Tide

Virginia's first light rail system will open this Friday - right here in Norfolk. The Tide is a 7.4 mile line that stretches from Newtown Road to Fort Norfolk and includes 11 rail stations. Norfolk School Board closed meeting was illegal

It was interesting to see the way this situation played out. It was reminiscent of my struggles with the Cumberland County government. Steven G. Vegh of PilotOnline.com wrote an article that was published last week, asking many questions about the requirements of the FOIA law when it concerns closed meetings. First, he asked the City … Continue reading Norfolk School Board closed meeting was illegal

Loyola’s campaign office is where?

On his Facebook page today, Republican Ben Loyola announced the opening of his campaign headquarters. Only one problem: the office isn't in the 6th Senate district! That bright green line separates the 6th from the 7th, at least according to the redistricting plan approved by the General Assembly. Loyola's office is at the yellow flag, … Continue reading Loyola’s campaign office is where?
