According to PilotOnline: A July 18 public hearing has been postponed on health care projects, including a downsized Bon Secours DePaul Medical Center, Michael Byrnes, executive director of Eastern Virginia Health Systems Agency, said this evening. Byrnes said a new date has not been set. A 30-day postponement was requested by Bon Secours Hampton Roads … Continue reading DePaul hearing postponed

DePaul removes 30 beds from service

Bon Secours DePaul Medical Center has removed 30 beds from service, according to The Virginian Pilot. The removal means that there are about 135 staffed beds out of the total 238 licensed beds for the facility. Interesting, as that figure is almost identical to the 134 beds that the city's consultant determined was appropriate and … Continue reading DePaul removes 30 beds from service

Newspapers: “Woe is me”

I guess Don Luzzatto got up on the wrong side of the bed. His Friday editorial in The Virginian Pilot was an interesting juxtaposition of how a movie company is like a newspaper (huh?) thinly disguised as an attack on bloggers. I'm not sure what someone slipped in his latte but despite "how many people … Continue reading Newspapers: “Woe is me”

DePaul Emergency 134

The closest hospital to me is DePaul. The non-profit facility has served the community since 1855 and was Norfolk's first public hospital. From that point, the facility was operated by the Daughters of Charity, an order of nuns. The hospital moved to its current Granby Street location in 1944 and in 1996, sponsorship of the … Continue reading DePaul Emergency 134

Norfolk Dems lose a good one

Doris Hildreth, a longtime member of the Norfolk City Democratic Committee, passed away earlier this week. Doris was a retired labor relations specialist and unions remained her passion. It is appropriate that her obituary mentions her being a member of the Young at Heart Club, because that, along with her insistence on the union bug … Continue reading Norfolk Dems lose a good one

Norfolk commercial properties underassessed

Duh! Not sure we needed a consultant to tell us this: ... commercial properties in the city are underassessed by as much as 30 percent What is interesting is that the amount of real estate taxes not assessed cannot be quantified at this point: Commercial real estate provides a small percentage of the estimated $203 … Continue reading Norfolk commercial properties underassessed

Affordable housing in Hampton Roads

The front page of Monday's Virginian Pilot carried an article on the lack of affordable housing in the region, focusing specifically on Section 8. The graph at the left (click to enlarge) shows part of the problem but what got me was this: Both Norfolk and Portsmouth are authorized to give out far more vouchers … Continue reading Affordable housing in Hampton Roads

Random thoughts

The Rules and Bylaws Committee of the DNC will be meeting Saturday to hear challenges to the decision to strip Florida and Michigan of all of their delegates. Interested individuals were able to sign up to speak and I understand all of the slots filled in seven minutes! I think that is pretty amazing, and … Continue reading Random thoughts

Memorial Bash quickie

I'll try to get up a more comprehensive post later today, including some photos from the event. We had a good crowd of Democrats from throughout the region and I think the event went well. The weather was perfect! And the fun part of the event - the straw poll - had interesting results. I … Continue reading Memorial Bash quickie
