Interesting juxtaposition: Marshall Newman in the Pilot

I guess my fellow Hampton Roads bloggers Insider and hrconservative must have had a page missing from their newspapers today . Both of them chose to focus on the opinion piece written by Victoria Cobb, executive director of the Family Foundation, and a supporter of the Marshall Newman amendment. There is a reason they call … Continue reading Interesting juxtaposition: Marshall Newman in the Pilot

Quick hits

Lamont wins Ned Lamont is the Democratic nominee for Senate in Connecticut and incumbent Joe Lieberman is off running as an independent. I was surprised at the lack of TV coverage last night. Given how this race had played out on the internet, I expected the MSM to give it more coverage. As it turned … Continue reading Quick hits

Pilot amendment report: VCA and mine are better

This has got to be about the lamest report I've seen on the Marshall Newman town hall meeting yesterday. I mean, couldn't the reporter have bothered to bone up just a little on the issues before she covered the meeting? How about just reading the amendment? How about knowing that gay marriage is already illegal … Continue reading Pilot amendment report: VCA and mine are better

On the Record with Joel Rubin: Moran and Webb

The first segment of today's installment of "On the Record" dealt with transportation and the upcoming special session on it. The segment featured Newport News delegate Phil Hamilton (R-93rd), a member of the House Appropriations Committee, and Alexandria delegate Brian Moran (D-46th), chairman of the House Democratic Caucus. Hamilton's position is that there is sufficient … Continue reading On the Record with Joel Rubin: Moran and Webb

In a brief blurb in today's paper, the Virginian-Pilot announced its new policy on letters to the editor. Previously, you could only get printed once every five months. That always seemed a bit extreme to me. With the new policy, that time frame has been shortened to thirty days. It's about time!

The government has decided to refund a tax which has been collected illegally on long distance telephone service. The 3% tax had been collected by phone service providers without Congressional authorization. The government says taxpayers can get back the last three years of the excise tax payments by asking for the money on their 2006 … Continue reading Illegal tax paid, but no refund coming?

Vermont court defies Virginia in same-sex custody case

From the Associated Press: The state Supreme Court ruled Friday that Vermont courts, and not those in Virginia, have exclusive jurisdiction over a case involving two women battling for custody of a child they had while they were in a lesbian relationship. The Virginia Court of Appeals had issued a stay on this until the … Continue reading Vermont court defies Virginia in same-sex custody case

Report: Marshall Newman town hall meeting

I attended the Marshall Newman town hall meeting this morning, hosted by the Tidewater Libertarian Party. Speaking on behalf of the supporters was Virginia Beach attorney Gary Byler and on behalf of the opponents was Norfolk attorney Michael Hamar, both UVA law grads. While the intent of the forum was good, I think hrconservative and … Continue reading Report: Marshall Newman town hall meeting

Pilot plays race card

One of the things that you can count on when it comes to the Virginian-Pilot is their crusade to paint Norfolk Vice Mayor Paul Riddick as the worst person - bar none - in the city. As I look back over the reports of the Pilot over the years Riddick has served on council, I … Continue reading Pilot plays race card
