ICYMI: Big plans in need of big explanations

Norfolk mermaidMy latest op-ed, title above, appeared in The Virginian-Pilot Thursday. In it, I address the effects on Norfolk’s bonding capacity as they take on a new hotel-convention center while simultaneously trying to raise taxes for schools, the cost of which is in excess of $100 million.

The last time Norfolk was worried about its bonding capacity, it was at about $1 billion. When I looked at the 2012 financial statements (pdf), it was nearly $1.3 billion. At some point, Norfolk needs to explain how they intend to address this.

Of course, I’m not holding my breath.

My column appears in The Virginian-Pilot on Thursdays.
