A year ago this time, I was heading to Worcester, Maryland to get married. Right now, I’m waiting for the decision from the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals on the Bostic case. Releasing it today would be a very nice anniversary present.
I witnessed the original arguments in this case but and was, obviously, thrilled with the initial ruling, which came on Valentine’s Day. My schedule made it impossible to attend the appeals panel hearing; apparently, it included one of the worst – perhaps the worst – arguments ever made against marriage equality.
My mail this week brought two things: an anniversary card from my sister-in-law (she never forgets a date!) and an offer for insurance for “newlyweds.” I’m guessing the latter bought a list of all of the marriage licenses issued in Maryland 😉
The champagne is already cooling and the top of the wedding cake is thawing out. Tonight, we celebrate.
And maybe by next year this time, the Supreme Court will have ruled in our favor.
Hope is the thing with feathers
That perches in the soul
And sings the tune without the words
And never stops at all.
Happy anniversary, my darling!
