Campaign ads in the 2nd Congressional District have started to appear. Challenger Paul Hirschbiel was up first. Monday, his ad "Teacher" began running Today, incumbent Scott Rigell released his first ad, "Performance Review." The redrawn district retains most of its previous area and adds a portion of Newport News.

Douglass holds town hall meeting (VA-5)

John Douglass, candidate for the 5th Congressional District seat, had a town hall meeting Charlottesville Monday night, in which he used straight talk in comparing what he would do in office and that which Robert Hurt is doing now and for the last almost two years. One of the main points Mr. Douglass made was … Continue reading Douglass holds town hall meeting (VA-5)

Is Virginia the “mother” of another president?

As a kid, I was taught that Virginia was the "Mother of Presidents," given that eight U.S. presidents were born here. Stretching that a bit, could Virginia claim a ninth? This story says that Ancestry.com has researched President Barack Obama's lineage and concludes he has "likely" descended from a Virginia slave. The kicker is that … Continue reading Is Virginia the “mother” of another president?

ICYMI: Property rights on the ballot

My latest op-ed, title above, appeared in Wednesday's Virginian-Pilot. While there was little doubt that the governor would sign the legislation necessary to put the question on the ballot, he didn't actually do so until July 16. I'll most likely be writing another column or two on the subject as Election Day approaches. It seems … Continue reading ICYMI: Property rights on the ballot

Kaine-Allen debate on YouTube

The entire debate between Senate candidates Tim Kaine and George Allen can be viewed, in nine, roughly 7-minute increments, here. It's a shame it wasn't broadcast, but thanks to Virginia Business for getting this up.

Obama in VB: Warner and Kaine

I never know when I go to these things exactly what I'm going to do. A lot of times, it depends on the setup. So I grabbed my camera, which also does video, for Friday's rally with President Obama. Unfortunately, I didn't grab my tripod. Which means the videos are a little shaky. And standing … Continue reading Obama in VB: Warner and Kaine

Obama in VB

President Barack Obama brought his vision for Virginia's middle class to Green Run High School in Virginia Beach earlier today. It was the first of stops, with my old high school, Phoebus, in Hampton being the second. A third stop was planned for Roanoke. Some 1,400 people crowded the gym, with another 700 in an … Continue reading Obama in VB

Friday fun: President Obama visits Hampton Roads

President Obama is coming to Virginia this weekend, and his first stop of the day is in Virginia Beach. I'll be there to cover the event. In the meantime, here's a little quiz I found about the Affordable Care Act. It tests your knowledge of the law. I got all ten questions right 🙂 A … Continue reading Friday fun: President Obama visits Hampton Roads

ICYMI: Community, family and faith

My latest op-ed, title above, appeared in The Virginian Pilot Wednesday. Once again, the website display doesn't do the printed paper justice - just take a look for yourself. It's almost cliche' to say that someone will be missed, but in this case, it happens to be true. What I saw Monday night at the … Continue reading ICYMI: Community, family and faith
