Pilot opinion on gay marriage: Make it legal

In Sunday's paper, The Virginian-Pilot editorial board came out in favor of legalization of gay marriage. To deny marriage to any couple solely on the basis of the way they are born makes a mockery of America's bedrock principles. To refuse marriage to gay people based on tradition or cultural norms elevates both above human … Continue reading Pilot opinion on gay marriage: Make it legal

Friday (not so) funny: church member defends pastor

I happened to have caught the interview below when it aired a couple of nights ago. The pastor of her church has called for gays and lesbians to be put into concentration camps behind electric fences and left to die. (I bet not even Del. Bob Marshall would go quite that far.) The funny part … Continue reading Friday (not so) funny: church member defends pastor

Who knew being gay cuts life expectancy 20 years?

That would be Virginia's chief homophobe, Del. Bob Marshall! I'm sure he has a study from somebody somewhere that backs that up, right? After all, he was so right on the "sodomy is not a civil right" thing. Not! Tonight's GOP Senate debate ought to be interesting 😉

The next election

My latest op-ed appeared in The Virginian-Pilot Wednesday. The Republican primary for U.S. Senate is barely registering with voters outside of those who already follow politics closely. That makes for a pretty steep hill for anyone other than George Allen to climb. Jamie Radtke has begun airing radio ads, which may garner her a few … Continue reading The next election

Around Hampton Roads: Gadgets in school, Hamilton appeal

I'm using this graphic of Hampton Roads because there are some who want to change it - again. Kerry Daugherty has a column today about it. Most folks outside of the region that I run into have never bought into the Hampton Roads moniker, anyway. They still call it Tidewater. Virginia Beach is going to … Continue reading Around Hampton Roads: Gadgets in school, Hamilton appeal

Mistakes happen

The explosion on Twitter Sunday morning in regards to comments made by Newark, N.J. mayor Cory Booker prompted me to watch the rebroadcast of "Meet the Press" Sunday afternoon. While I agree Booker went off message, I'm not ready to throw the baby out with the bathwater, like some. The criticisms of Booker are unwarranted. … Continue reading Mistakes happen

LTJG Thorne

Guest post by David Beemer LTJG Thorne going public on national TV while on active duty 20 years ago doesn’t disqualify him to sit on the bench today. I actually believe fighting for what you think is right, regardless of the consequences, is exactly the quality we should all aspire to. Society changes slowly. For … Continue reading LTJG Thorne

A victory for ‘Virginia’s chief homophobe’

Have to admit that I'm not too happy with the title of my latest op-ed, which appeared in The Virginian-Pilot Wednesday. Not because it isn't true, but because it is. All of it. Bob Marshall calls himself "Virginia's chief homophobe." And he and his merry band over at the "Family" Foundation managed to derail the … Continue reading A victory for ‘Virginia’s chief homophobe’

How they voted

This photo, taken by Del. Mark Keam, was all we had last night to know how the House of Delegates voted on Tracy Thorne-Begland. We now have the roster, via RTD. The 33 delegates who voted in favor of this highly qualified candidate were: David B. Albo, R-Fairfax Kenneth C. Alexander, D-Norfolk Mamye E. BaCote, … Continue reading How they voted

Flies, honey and vinegar

There's an old saying, "You can catch more flies with honey than vinegar." Sometimes, folks lose sight of this when making a pitch. Case in point: Virginia FREE. I spent Thursday and Friday last week at the Virginia Society of CPAs Leaders' Summit. We had a number of speakers over the course of the two … Continue reading Flies, honey and vinegar
